Satyam Shivam Sundaram
Satyam Shivam Sundaram is a philosophy of life mentioned in the Svetasvatara Upanishad. My attention was drawn to it in the philosophy class during the PhD coursework. Our faculty used this song from a famous 1978 hindi film to explain to us what is philosophy. I thought it was such an important thing to know. It helped me understand why we're doing a Doctor of Philosophy. Turns out there is a philosophy of everything- of economics, of chemistry, of maths, of management or of the languages. Once you understand the philosophy on which your subject runs, you can understand it's any aspect. You can then even see things which are not in front of you. To see what you cannot see is philosophy.
"Ishwar satya hai
Satya hi Shiv hai
Shiv hi sundar hai
...Satyam Shivam sundaram"
(Matter is the ultimate truth
Truth is the actual good
Goodness is true beauty.)
I took some time to read what it means and realised that like all of Vedic philosophy, even this is open to different interpretations based on what the person searching for intends to find.
Satyam Shivam Sundaram:
To truly live is to know the truth- the ultimate reality of things, beyond what the eyes can see. There is good in everything even if you can't see it. Goodness is the ultimate truth. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, only he who has known the ultimate truth and seen the good in things is able to perceive actual beauty. The ultimate purpose of life thus, is to see the truth, the good and the beauty that lies within us and in things (matter) around us.
