Beyond Independence

One of my friends just pointed out that by continuously celebrating Independence Day even after 74 years, we somewhere empower the people who even today take internal pride in having subjugated almost the entire world. It's a great day to remember the sacrifices of our people and our journey as a nation but for us some other day should be bigger. And I totally subscribe to this thinking.

Perhaps for us the most important day is Republic Day- the day we gifted ourselves the constitution that defined who we are, gave us a personality and a direction.

I do believe that celebrating our triumph over someone again and again diminishes us in some way. We always talk about how we're still living in a colonial hangover and that stops us from viewing ourselves as limitless individuals of our own. Perhaps giving this day so much importance is also one of those things holding us back? And maybe the grandeur associated with Independence day is eventually going to phase out?

On that note, a very happy Independence Day to all of us! Proud to be a part of this rich heritage. ✨
