Movie Discussion: The Way We Were (1973)
Just saw 'The Way We Were'. What a brilliant movie. So realistic. She's a communist who believes in her causes and in fighting for the right principles and he believes that such things are not for the common people who just want to live peacefully. She's always protesting, fighting with people in his friend circles for their casual political jokes, she keeps pushing him to be better. He leaves her in between when there's too much friction, only to melt later when she shows inclination to work this out. They give it a go but the chaos they silenced with love bursts again when her participation in communist rallies involves the govt. They finally part ways after she gives birth.
I feel the nuances that the writers were able to pick were so real. She pushed for the relationship because there was attraction. He gave in because there was love and care. But he was finding it very hard because she was always too serious and in rebel mode about politics. She tried to change for him. And the good parts were fun but the friction made them so unhappy. Initially it seemed like she pushed for a relationship he wasn't interested in but come to think of it, he compromised a lot just to be with as well. He gave up when it started taking a toll on him. Till the end of the movie even when they parted, his heart was with her but the relationship was too much for him because they were so different.
I think the problem was with the value system. And when that differs there's always friction. Opposites attract but you need a common base to stand on. The principles by which you live your life need to align.
