Politics and Social Media Madness

On Remaining Politically Neutral Yet Aware in the Age of Social Media

Constructive Criticism 101:

How not to criticise:
" I can't believe I live in a country where so and so is happening....."

How to criticise:
" I can't believe the govt. is bringing in this policy, historically things have been this way, presently we need it to be this way, this particular policy has the following pros and cons. But the cons outweigh the pros and hence we need to revaluate. I am unhappy with the way things are going and these are my suggestions."

Supporting a Party 101:

How not to express support:

*Sharing 500 articles per day about putting down some other political party/ their ideology or posts of people who have 1 Lakh opinions on 1 lakh random things without any facts/information/ suggestions/ideas/positive solutions*

How to express support:

*Sharing this or that article that shares some good work that you think will be good for the country or talks about ideas/facts/hopes and aspirations*

Identifying News 101:

What doesn't classify as news:

Opinions- that are only either sharing positives or negatives, that aim to pull down somebody or something without giving a holistic view of why it’s important, over the top and hyper writing/speaking style that is aimed at creating an opinion indirectly.

What classifies as news:

Any article that answers Five Ws and one H, namely, Who, What, Where When, Why and How or tells you about the provisions of the policy/bill and gives you a 360° view of what it plans to do so that you can create your own opinion, debate that tries to extract as much from both the sides and basically facilitates exchange of ideas instead of tending towards one side.

Remaining Politically Neutral 101:

Not To do:
  • Get influenced with one piece of information celebrating your idea or get upset by something that disses your idea.
  • Be so in love with an idea/ideology/party or hate another, that the vision gets blurred by it and you view everything from the lens of your personal emotions.
To do:
  • Everytime you see an article/ post, verify the facts, try to find out the history of that particular issue, read articles that concur with your view and then with a heavy heart read articles about ideas that you just don't agree with.Create your opinion about it with facts and data compiled from both view points.
  • Keep in mind that you care because it affects you and your country and not because you are campaigning for some party.
  • Weigh every piece of information with a fresh lens.
