Election Fever, Religion and an Inspiration from Kerala
At times like these when all sources of news are full of negativity and religion led paranoia my mind goes back to my years in Kerala where you would see Bharatnatyam dancing christians/muslims, christmas carol singing Hindus/muslims, Diwali celebrating muslims/Christians, Eid celebrating Hindus/christians. I do know of muslims going to Sabarimala too. This may seem odd to many but it's really common there.
I don't know how it is now, it's been long. But i remember it being a state that truly understood that culture and religion are two different things. That culture is your history, your lifestyle evolution, your social identity while religion is your faith, your god, your inner spirituality.
We celebrated literally every festival under the sun in our school. I wish all states/people learnt to separate and value culture and religion like that.Oh and Onam--people looking for religion there are going to get really confused!
I am waiting for this election season to get over so that the collecting dumbing down of the youth stops and we start questioning politicians on real parameters like their parliamentary attendance ,the number of questions they asked, how many debates they participated in, how many private member bills they introduced and what is their daily routine like, their approach of dealing with people and their accessibility when elections are not anywhere around.
I hope that once these elections pass, whoever wins, we- the youth turn into critiques that argue on intelligent points and raise the level of debate in this country.
